A Trip Through the Wild Coast

During apartheid the Transkei was a political hotspot and road travel through this part of the country was risky.  Just the thought of driving through the Transkei, also known as the Wild Coast, conjured up memories of all those frightful stories one heard from time to time.

In order for us to stay within our daily kilometres on the hired car we were driving, the shortest route between Durban and Port Elizabeth was through the Transkei.  Tales and rumours still abound in one degree or another so it wasn’t surprising we received a mixed reaction when we told friends and family of our intentions.

But heck, we’ve just returned from South America where we clocked over 15,000km of road travel.  How “Wild” could it be?
